After
5 years of renovating colonial houses in Merida I wanted
to do something more modern. I found this house around the
corner from me that was depressing to enter but when you
got to the back yard it was a revelation. The sky was so
big, open and beautiful over the garden that I bought it
right away not knowing what to do to the awful house. I decided
to open as many of the low ceilings as possible and put in
skylights and vaults to take advantage of the natural light
and ventilation. I used a white plaster with sand throughout
the house and only painted a couple of rooms. The result
is a relaxing and peaceful atmosphere that overcomes you
when you open the front door.
My concept
of what the rooms should be kept changing and in the end
I decided to keep the 4 bathrooms but use 2 of the 4 bedrooms
in a more versatile way. So the house currently has 3 living
rooms and two bedrooms. One of the rooms I´m going
to turn into a gym and another a media room. And I´ll
leave one as a lounge. Currently there are three dining areas.
The kitchen island will seat three. The formal dining room
seats 8 and the other dining area seats 4.
Meson
Moderna is just a couple of blocks from Ermita and a couple
of blocks from San Sebastian´s market and church.
The photos
were taken before I finished furnishing the house but check
the link below for more photo updates. This house is also
for sale.
